Jo Lyall, MD, Mindshare UK: Do Things Differently
Repeating the same action over and over and expecting a different result is the definition of insanity. I believe if you want to see progress and change, you have to find moments and opportunities to do things differently. Sounds obvious but we can get so caught up in the rhythm and pace of life that time flies and sometimes we look back wondering why things happened as they did. Big events or moments force reappraisal, take the cyber-attack, it changed our agency immensely and forced us to reevaluate how we do things as a business.
This week I had a power cut one evening which forced me to sit in a candlelit room without any electricity or heating and just wait. At first, I was irritated because 'I had so much to do' and this was a huge inconvenience. Then I realised thanks to my phone I still had music, a good torch and the internet. I sat, slowed down and relaxed. I waited and enjoyed the peace and nothing bad happened...
So - my Oath is 'Do Things Differently'. When challenges arise - I want to remember not to go with my first instinct but to take a moment to think about how the outcome could be different if I took a different perspective or tried a different approach.
The Christmas break is my favourite because it really feels like the one time of year when our industry properly slows down. The emails reduce and everything is a little more simple. When you finish for Christmas, take the time to feel the change in pace, be present and enjoy the time you spend with whoever is lucky enough to be with you. When you come back in January take a moment to think about what you want your year to look like, what could you do differently?
