Verizon Media Secures #2 Spot in Industry Ranking on Human Rights Commitments
Verizon Media is committed to respecting its users' rights to free expression and privacy throughout its business, and today we've been acknowledged for sharing what we do -- securing the #2 spot in the latest Ranking Digital Rights (RDR) Corporate Accountability Index. This ranking evaluates 24 of the world's top internet, mobile and telecommunications companies on publicly stated commitments to free expression and privacy.
Now in its fourth year, the Index has contributed to a vibrant discussion about the efforts of technology companies to respect human rights and the role of companies, civil society, and governments in these efforts. We actively engage in these conversations. For instance, I recently joined a panel discussion at the IAPP's inaugural program, Content Moderation in 2019, to talk about how companies are balancing global commitments to human rights with local law and culture when it comes to moderating content online.
This year's ranking emphasized the importance of corporate governance and oversight in identifying and managing human rights impacts. Verizon Media takes a structured approach to this work through the Business & Human Rights Program (BHRP). The BHRP is a decade-old program originally launched at Yahoo that continues to provide the foundation for our efforts to make responsible decisions in the area of human rights.
Today's results follow the successful completion of Verizon Media's Global Network Initiative (GNI) independent assessment in March 2019. The GNI assessment reviewed our company's efforts to implement the GNI Principles on Freedom of Expression and Privacy. The multi-stakeholder GNI Board of Directors determined that Verizon Media is making good faith efforts to implement the GNI Principles with improvement over time.
Addressing the impact of our business on human rights requires constant commitment and dedicated focus. We appreciate the opportunity to engage with RDR, GNI and other organizations on this important work.
